Lancaster University Canoe Club

Lancaster University Canoe Club combines campus-pool canoe polo with river kayaking around the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Its current Students' Union listing explains joining and borrowed kit. Students have a direct membership route. The linked constitution also covers staff, Cumbria members and public applicants needing committee approval. This is separate from Lancaster and District Canoe Club.

Before you join

Adult beginners

Students can join through the SU-linked Rubric page. The constitution also covers Lancaster staff and University of Cumbria members. Public applicants need committee approval, with university members taking priority. It permits up to three free pool trials. The temporary trial option checked in October 2026 ends on 31 October; confirm the arrangement before attending. New and less-active returning members must complete a 50-metre warm-water swim and a capsize drill in kit. Membership and trip travel costs are separate.

Equipment

The club lends paddling equipment. Bring clothes and footwear that can get wet; the older FAQ advises against cotton. Its constitution allows approved equipment charges and charges non-members or discounted members for borrowing, subject to exceptions. BUCS equipment needs take priority. Ask about the boat size and current borrowing terms. The swim and capsize requirements specify helmet, buoyancy aid, spraydeck and swimwear. Private boat and paddle storage is subject to the boathouse policy.

Accessibility

Sport Lancaster lists step-free or lift access, accessible parking near its entrance and accessible changing with hoists. Trained staff operate the swimming pool hoist; the movable pool floor needs advance arrangement. These facilities support swimming and building access. They do not verify a kayak transfer, adapted boat or support on LUCC river trips. Discuss the session and individual assistance with both the club and sports centre.

Where the club paddles

Pool practice uses the university sports centre at Bailrigg. Its area map covers that complex, not the Halton boathouse or a river put-in. The constitution places the boat store at Halton Station. The FAQ says trips collect kit there, but the transport policy starts polo trips at Slaidburn Stores and river trips at the boathouse. Confirm the departure point for your event. Bowland College is the club's business address, not its pool or riverside store.
