Laburnum Boat Club

Laburnum Boat Club is a community boating charity beside Regent's Canal in Hackney. Adults can enquire about beginner canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding. Its youth club, family paddles and inclusion programmes have different attendance rules. The supervised open-access youth club lets young people leave freely; family sessions follow a separate booking route.

Before you join

Adult beginners

The Adult Club welcomes beginners and requires advance online booking. Its page and Bookwhen say over 18, while the home page says 18-plus. Ask which applies at age 18. Activity membership and company membership are different; company membership alone is not a paddle booking. The adult page limits its Universal Credit offer to Hackney residents, so check eligibility and current charges.

Junior paddlers

The detailed youth page says ages 9-18; the home page says 9-19. Every child needs a membership form before attending. Staff supervise activities, but this open-access club allows young people to leave freely and excludes parents or unauthorised adults from the site. Confirm whether that arrangement suits your child. Family canoeing is different: no age minimum is stated, but a booking needs at least one under-18 and allows up to five family places.

Equipment

Family sessions include all equipment, with a change of clothes needed for canoeing or kayaking. Youth participants need spare clothes, spare shoes, a towel, water bottle and sun hat. The adult booking page recommends PE-style clothing and old trainers. Check the craft, buoyancy aid and any specialist fitting for your chosen programme. A family-session equipment promise does not describe every course or away trip.

Accessibility

The owner describes step-free site access, accessible toilets, showers and changing rooms, a canal-side hoist and contrasting markings. Its inclusion pages describe adaptive fittings and staff support that can be arranged beforehand. Confirm the specific boat, hoist transfer, fitting and assistance you need. The ramp and lift on Lady Mildmay are narrowboat facilities, not a description of getting into a kayak.

Where the club paddles

The centre is on Laburnum Street, London E2 8BH. Family canoeing uses Regent's Canal. The owner lists Haggerston and Hoxton stations nearby, while independent mapping identifies the named club building. The map shows that building's area, not its gate or water-entry point. Adult evenings, youth clubs and family sessions have separate schedules. Use the programme's current booking instructions for arrival.
