Before you join

Adult beginners

Adult membership starts at 18 under the April 2025 constitution. The joining page sets a 50-metre unaided swimming requirement. It describes a four-week trial, while the FAQ allows three tasters. Confirm that limit and the current fees before joining. Membership is completed online; the membership year starts from joining or renewal.

Junior paddlers

The FAQ welcomes paddlers from age seven. Junior membership covers under-18s. Some experienced teenagers move to senior sessions earlier, depending on ability; that does not change the adult membership age. Parents should arrange any help with changing. Coaches are not expected to supervise changing routinely. Ask the club about the right session group and parent attendance.

Equipment

Weekly sessions provide boats, paddles, buoyancy aids, helmets and cagoules. Bring swimwear or suitable personal clothing for the chosen session. Off-site hire is members-only. Private-trip hire needs coach approval and sufficient membership history. Hire normally lasts no more than two days unless the committee agrees otherwise. Book available equipment with the club officers.

Accessibility

The main clubhouse changing rooms are upstairs. Its June 2026 policy identifies a ground-floor accessible toilet/changing space and individual arrangements for people needing assistance. These are building facilities, not proof of accessible kayak transfers, specialist craft or one-to-one support on the water. Discuss your needs and the swimming requirement before booking.

Where the club paddles

The clubhouse is the Old Cottage Baths at the Albert Avenue pool complex. The FAQ asks visitors to report to clubhouse reception at the front of the car park. Pool choice and changing arrangements vary by season. The map centres on the pool complex, not the clubhouse entrance. Check the booked meeting arrangements and the operator's current parking notices.
