Before you join
- Adult beginners
Arrange a new-member session or an introductory course before applying for membership. A coach must approve your application. Experienced paddlers also attend an assessment so the club can decide which trips suit their skills. The outdoor beginner route runs in summer; pool introductions are described for February to April. Ask which route is currently open.
- Junior paddlers
Under-18s may attend a new-member session with a responsible adult present throughout, either on the bank or on the water. River sessions and trips require that adult to accompany the young paddler. No minimum age is stated on the reviewed joining page. Check the child's experience, supervision arrangements and available place with the club.
- Equipment
The club can supply boats, buoyancy aids, paddles, spray decks and helmets for learning. Members may borrow boats on a first-come basis, with a GBP 1 contribution stated for summer evening borrowing. Beginners can start on a sit-on-top or a sit-in kayak. Ask in advance if you want a canoe, and follow the pool's clean-boat rules.
- Accessibility
Two changing rooms are available at the compound, but its nearest toilet is at the park visitor centre. The club's walking directions cross a bridge over Alconbury Brook. The reviewed material gives no measurements or details about wheelchair access to that route or getting into a boat. Discuss mobility needs with the club before travelling.
- Where the club paddles
The base sits between a lake and Alconbury Brook in Hinchingbrooke Country Park. Saturday river trips generally leave at 9.30 and need suitable skills; complete a new-member session first. The lake is not available for independent watersports outside club use. Follow the club's published walking directions rather than treating the postal address as a vehicle entrance.
