Herts Canoe Club

Herts Canoe Club paddles from Hartham Common on the River Lea. Its Sunday programme covers beginner coaching, social and touring paddles, whitewater trips and open canoeing for people aged 11 and over.

Before you join

Adult beginners: The 2026/27 adult fee is GBP 86. Experienced paddlers can arrange a free Sunday assessment and pay only for hired kit. New paddlers start with the four-session course. Every 2026 course is full, and the club offers a 2027 waiting list.
Junior paddlers: The club welcomes people aged over 11. A parent or guardian must book for anyone under 18. Junior membership is GBP 40, or GBP 25 per junior living with an adult member. The beginner course costs GBP 150 and includes kit. Check the waitlist before planning.
Equipment: Course fees include a kayak, paddle, spray deck, buoyancy aid, helmet and lightweight cag. Member hire costs GBP 5 per boat per session and 50p for a paddle or spray deck. Buoyancy aids and helmets are free. The club also has open canoes for members to hire.
Accessibility: Changing facilities and hot showers are available. Course guidance asks for a 10-metre swim and confidence in cold water for up to 15 minutes. It describes low kayak seats and uneven banks, with support as needed. Contact the club to discuss suitable adjustments before booking.
Where the club paddles: Sunday paddles meet at 09:30, aim to be on the water by 10:00 and finish around 12:30. The clubhouse address is Hartham Common, Hartham Lane, SG14 1QR. OpenStreetMap names the club building but uses a different surrounding postcode, so follow the club's arrival advice.
