Devizes Canoe Club

Devizes Canoe Club has its own clubhouse and canal access at Lower Wharf. Around 160 members take part in recreational paddling, sprint and marathon racing, with beginner courses, junior groups, club boats and land training.

Before you join

Adult beginners: New and returning paddlers normally start with the six-hour Introduction to Paddlesport course. It is split across three Sunday sessions in spring and summer. Experienced racing-boat paddlers can ask for a competency assessment instead. Regular club activity includes Thursday and Sunday sessions.
Junior paddlers: The minimum age is eight, and juniors must be able to swim. New juniors begin with six ad hoc Saturday sessions before choosing ad hoc or regular junior membership. Coached junior sessions follow a set training plan, and the current programme includes adventure and racing groups.
Equipment: Club boats are available for most paddlers, alongside a boat store, gym equipment and kayak ergometers. As members gain experience, the club encourages them to buy their own paddle and buoyancy aid. Private racing-boat storage is limited and allocated during membership renewal.
Accessibility: The clubhouse provides a ramped wheelchair entrance and an accessible toilet. Regular wheelchair users may find the separate changing and shower block or the stepped launch unsuitable. The club does not store wheelchair-suitable craft, but says it can refer paddlers to a suitable specialist centre.
Where the club paddles: Lower Wharf provides the clubhouse and direct Kennet and Avon Canal access. Only blue-badge holders may park at the site. The narrow access lane is private, and drivers should only enter when permitted for boat loading or unloading. Public parking is available elsewhere in Devizes.
