Before you join

Adult beginners

Beginners are welcome, but club membership requires CSSC eligibility. Most public-sector staff can join directly. Other adults may need linked membership or nomination by a current member. The 2026 canoe-club fee is £40, with CSSC subscription and activity charges also possible. Check the full cost before joining.

Junior paddlers

The current joining and weekly-session pages describe an adult CSSC membership route. They do not publish a junior membership, minimum age or family session. Confirm with the membership secretary. Tuesday club nights should not be treated as a youth offer.

Equipment

Members can use general-purpose, whitewater and sea kayaks, three open canoes, paddles and spray decks, plus buoyancy aids and helmets. The session, trip and paddler's fit determine availability. Tell the leader what you need before committing to an outing.

Accessibility

The club asks members to disclose medical conditions or disabilities and says it will try to accommodate them. Changing rooms and showers are available. Published access information stops there. Prospective members should ask about steps, the route to the water, getting into a boat, specialist equipment and hands-on assistance.

Where the club paddles

Summer Tuesday sessions use the Thames from the Civil Service Boathouse at Barnes Bridge. The current roster changes leaders and start times around the tide. Fortnightly winter Tuesdays move to Britannia Leisure Centre in Hackney. Trips and events use other waters, so follow the individual notice.
