Chelmsford Canoe Club

Chelmsford Canoe Club introduces adults and juniors to paddling on the Rivers Chelmer and Can. The volunteer club supports recreational paddling, touring, sprint and marathon racing from its city-centre clubhouse.

Before you join

Adult beginners: Beginners arrange an initial starter session, usually on a Saturday. The club charges £22 for that session and registration. For the membership year starting 1 April 2026, it publishes £55 full and £80 family rates. Paddlers must be at least 10 and swim 50 metres in clothing.
Junior paddlers: Junior starter sessions are usually on weekday evenings when coaches are available. The published annual junior fee is £40 for under-18s. The minimum age is 10 and the swim requirement is 50 metres in clothing. Parents should confirm the assigned group, timing and collection arrangements.
Equipment: After joining and showing suitable control, members can hire a club canoe or kayak, paddle and buoyancy aid for £5 per session. The club does not hire this equipment to non-members and expects paddlers to buy their own kit and boat after about a year. Rack space has a separate fee and may be unavailable.
Accessibility: Accessible changing rooms and showers are available in the clubhouse, while the national entry also lists Paddleability. Public information stops short of explaining the river edge, transfer help, specialist craft or tailored assistance. Discuss the whole visit and chosen group before booking.
Where the club paddles: The clubhouse is at Kings Head Meadow on Empire Walk, beside the Rivers Chelmer and Can. Sessions depend on coaching and ability. Saturdays mix ages and levels, while Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday groups focus on racing. Beginners receive an arranged time rather than joining any session.
