Cardiff Bay Kayakers

Cardiff Bay Kayakers focuses on flatwater racing from the CIWW centre. Its members use the sheltered Ely for sprint and marathon training, with ocean-ski competition, distinct junior coaching and an entry path for experienced newcomers.

Before you join

Adult beginners: Annual club membership is £60. Members also need Canoe Wales membership and a CIWW launch disclaimer. The official site welcomes new members but says it cannot currently support complete beginners, so contact the membership secretary with your experience before paying or travelling.
Junior paddlers: The club has a separate junior section. Under-18 paddlers need an approved competent adult with them on the water, and under-16s must remain supervised during club activity. Coached squads have their own competency conditions, so a parent should ask which route is open and suitable.
Equipment: Full members may use club boats during agreed access. The fleet runs from stable craft to racing K1 and K2 kayaks. Personal storage is not normally available. The surf-ski programme expects participants to bring their own ski, paddle and clothing, so confirm the exact session's kit.
Accessibility: Membership is open regardless of disability, and the national directory lists paracanoe. Neither the club nor venue page explains step-free water entry, transfers, adapted craft or individual help for club sessions. Ask the membership secretary and CIWW about the route and support needed.
Where the club paddles: Training uses the River Ely from Cardiff International White Water. The club lists Wednesday evenings, usually from 5pm, and Saturday mornings from 9am, with some coached sessions at other times. CIWW access is limited to agreed periods, and weather, water quality and ability affect participation.
